Humane Habitat (2016 – present)

Humane Habitiat is a one-way outdoor haunted maze centered around the creation of chimeras and science experiments gone horribly wrong. This outdoor complex was, as the story goes, abandoned several months ago and what we see are the trapped, tortured survivors of the experimentation. The complex consists of 4 buildings which we explore in sequential order: The reception area and animal storage, the laboratory and surgery room, the chimera holding cells, and the security/military headquarters. All 4 cabins and the connecting pathways between them are wired up for sound. Below is a short representation of the sound dedicated to each area as one traverses the maze.

Maze Sound Design Breakdown

Below is a soundtrack summarizing the sound design of the Humane Habitat haunted outdoor maze. The track is designed to give you a cursory audio experience of the maze in just over a minute. The sound design of the maze is explained at length below. As you listen through the maze’s of audio from zone to zone, note the building of tension and sound intensities. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this design; I’ll be happy to answer them.

{{It is worth mentioning that the following track simply samples what happens in each zone. Each zone’s soundtrack consists of music containing at least 30-45 minutes of unique content per zone, so it keeps things at least somewhat fresh for the scare actors that work the maze for 5 hours a night.}}

Humane Habitat Sound Design Details
[All timestamps below are in reference to the above track]

(TIME 0:00) – We begin the maze passing by.. a decrepit old green school bus that is “running”; speakers were placed inside the bus and at the tailpipe for a realistic engine noise. We also hear an alarm going off at the complex, which we hear coming from the first building as we’re passing the bus.
(TIME 0:05) – Once inside the reception area and animal chambers, we are greeted with animal noises, dripping pipes, and a creepy, hollow droning sound. One prop specifically mentioned was a realistic looking dummy of a chimpanzee with all it’s skin removed, hence the monkey sounds.
(TIME 0:14) – Exiting the 1st building, we hear the alarms again, and we go into the 2nd building
(TIME 0:17) – This is the defunct surgery room; we hear medical pumps and heart rate monitor beeps. A custom drone track made in Logic Pro X is also heard. Note that this building was uniquely limited in its audio capabilities: Only a PA horn was available to playback sounds. Therefore, this section of the track is equalized here to mimic playback in the cabin.
(TIME 0:29) – Leaving the surgery building, the path to the 3rd building features the same pathway alarm as before, but it’s been glitched out; slowed down and bit-crushed. The alarm system is clearly breaking down here… something has gone very, very wrong. We proceed into the 3rd building
(TIME 0:36) – This is the intensity peak for the maze, and here, this building is loud and in-your-face. The sound design here consists of animal noises (snakes and lions) vocoded to give voice to the misshapen suffering human-animal chimeras. Other sharp monster noises fill the air, and a dripping pipe emphasizes the state of disrepair the place has become.
(TIME 0:44) – The path leading to the final building has the same glitched-out alarm pattern as before, but now the sounds of chimeras attempting to scream for help in their misshapen voices pervade the area as well.
(TIME 0:53) – Old CRT television sets and ammunition boxes are everywhere in this building, apparently to monitor the activity throughout the complex. However, all most of the TVs don’t work and many of the working ones spookily intermittently flip between no-signal white noise and camera signals. The sound design reflects this, and includes vocoded chimera voices and a background drone track.
(TIME 1:05) – Finally, we close out the maze with a repeat from timestamp 0:44, a defunct alarm system and chimera voices. This is the last thing we hear as the final scare actors poise up for one last scare before sending guests on their way to enjoy the rest of the park and mazes therein.
